Massac Substation – Massac County, IL

Ameren

Ameren retained Reitz & Jens to provide geotechnical engineering and quality control/quality assurance services for a new 45-acre substation constructed in Massac County, Illinois. Reitz & Jens completed a geotechnical investigation of the substation site which included a detailed report of subsurface conditions and provided recommendations for the design/construction of deep and shallow foundations in this high seismic zone, stable slope and grading/compaction requirements.

Construction of the substation included extensive grading operations utilizing lime stabilization techniques. The grading contractor moved nearly one million cubic yards of soil to build a stable, drainable platform on which Ameren could construct the substation. The next phase of the operation included the construction of 430 drilled pier foundations as well as shallow foundations for substation equipment. During each of these phases, Reitz & Jens implemented a comprehensive quality control/quality assurance program. These services included verifying the stability of the subgrades, sampling and analysis of the fill materials, monitoring and testing of the structural fill, and the installation and monitoring of settlement plates for the 38-foot-deep fill. Reitz & Jens observed and documented all construction operations, and provided observations on all reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, structural formwork, and concrete placement methods.
